Learning About Breast Cancer
I too, had a bilateral mastectomy and just celebrated one year postoperative. Yes, there is pain when you have expanders but my plastic surgeon just told me if I had too much pain he would either take some saline out so the skin could stretch or delay the next filling a week or so. Just like pregnancy, everyone's skin stretches differently. Keep in touch with your surgeon/nurse, they will be more than happy to help you through this. This is a LONG process but so worth it. It took a little over a year to complete the whole process....nipple surgery and tattooing included. No one told me how long this took but my surgeon did say we would be very good friends through this...lol! Advil or ibuprofen was all i needed during the day and vicodin at night. The trick is to stay AHEAD of the pain. Take something as soon as you feel uncomfortable, that way the pain does get bad. My nurse had me take ibuprofen an hour before the saline injections and that helped a lot.
